A new scheme has been set up to make it easier for people on the council's housing register in Walton on Thames to find a home.

Landlords in the borough can now chose to accept a 'bond' from the council instead of a cash deposit. The bond exempts landlords from having to worry about deposit protection schemes - making the process far easier for the landlord.

Cllr James Browne, Housing Portfolio Holder at Elmbridge Borough Council launched the scheme recently. He said: "I am so pleased that we are now able to offer bonds to our private landlords as I understand many landlords now prefer this option as it means they can claim back any relevant costs at the end from the council and they don't have to put the deposit into a national protection scheme.

"Our first bond has now been issued and I would encourage other landlords to think about letting their properties through the council under this scheme."

A bond from the council provides an assurance that it will cover financial costs associated with damage beyond normal wear and tear during the tenancy up to a maximum value of one months rent. The council service provides all the paperwork, tenant introduction, viewings, preparation of an inventory and final checkout inspection all for free.

The first landlord to receive a Bond was Madeleine Neslany. She said : "This scheme makes absolute sense. It means I am able to let my property quickly and efficiently through the Rental Support Scheme with the minimum effort on my part."
