Walton-on-Thames residents are invited to get involved in a year-long festival of leisure and cultural activities which is set to bring the whole Elmbridge community together.
As preparations get underway for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, so too will Elmbridge celebrate.
The festival, called 'Elmbridge Celebrates…', has been granted the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme. It consists of a series of sports, health and cultural activities and events organised to inspire people to lead healthier lifestyles, get more active and celebrate the cultural diversity of the Borough.
With the Olympic Road Cycling Race and Time Trial taking place at their doorstep, Walton-on-Thames residents will find themselves at the heart of the action.
A Back to Sport project targeted at people who want to get back to sport or want to learn new sports skills began in January.
Seb Coe, chairman of London organising committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, said: "The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like 'Elmbridge Celebrates…' are enabling people in Elmbridge to make positive life changes."
Councillor Jan Fuller, portfolio holder for leisure and cultural services, added: "We invite residents to create their own Olympic or Jubilee memories. If you would like to put on a community event, volunteer or want to take up sport in 2012, we want to hear from you."
