Walton Playhouse set to have many more opening nights

Walton Playhouse is set to under go a major refurbishment that will secure the future of the venue for at least the next decade.

A report on options available for the future of the Walton Playhouse will go to a meeting of senior borough councillors on Wednesday. All the indications are that the costly works will receive political backing.

A measured, full condition and structural survey of the building was carried out to make a clear assessment of the future options for the facility. It identified a number of issues and necessary improvements to bring it up to standard.

The report considers the various options available and recommends a repair and refurbishment programme that will enhance the aesthetic appearance of the building and improve the facilities to meet the needs of the current user groups, while dealing with necessary health and safety and structural issues.

Helen Mills, Chairman of the Playhouse Users' Committee, said: "We are delighted with the proposal that the Playhouse is to be refurbished and revitalised, so that it can continue to serve the residents of Elmbridge for many years to come.

“We congratulate Elmbridge Borough Council on this demonstration of support for the performing arts, and look forward to co-operating closely with the Council on this exciting project to enhance and improve theatre facilities in the borough."

Subject to approval, the refurbishment is proposed to include a new roof, improved drainage, thermal insulation to windows and walls, damp proofing, updating the dressing room areas, improved bar area, improved foyer and ticket office, and updated heating system and will enhance the life span of the building for a number of years.

Cllr Jan Fuller, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, added: "After so many years of uncertainty, I am delighted that with this proposal we can now look to the future with confidence.

“The Walton Playhouse, with its film heritage and numerous theatrical productions has been at the heart of the community for many generations and is a wonderful asset for Elmbridge residents. I believe that the much needed proposed refurbishment programme will do justice to this much loved community venue".
